Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate fabric yardage for a basic garment?
The basic formula: (pattern piece length number of pieces) 36 = yards needed. For a simple skirt: measure from waist to hem, add seam allowances (typically 5/8" each). Two skirt panels side-by-side on 44"-wide fabric: (skirt length + 2") 2 panels 36" = yards. Always add 1015% extra for mistakes, pattern matching, or pre-wash shrinkage. Commercial sewing patterns list required yardage on the back envelope this is your most reliable guide.
What is seam allowance and how much should I add?
Seam allowance is the fabric between the cut edge and the stitching line. Standard amounts: 5/8" (1.6 cm) US commercial sewing patterns default; 1/2" (1.3 cm) common in quilting; 3/8" (1 cm) European patterns; 1/4" (6 mm) quilting seams. When calculating yardage, add your seam allowance to every edge that will be sewn. For a rectangular piece sewn on all 4 sides, add seam allowance 2 to both length and width.
What is pattern repeat and why does it matter for fabric yardage?
Pattern repeat is the distance between identical points in a repeating print or weave. For curtains and upholstery, you must add at least one full repeat per cut piece to ensure the pattern aligns across panels. A 24" pattern repeat on 84" curtains means rounding up: 84" 24" = 3.5, so you need 4 repeats 24" = 96" per panel vs. 84" without matching. Large repeats can add 12 extra yards per project always buy extra when working with patterned fabric.
How much does fabric shrink and should I pre-wash it?
Pre-washing is essential for cotton and linen, which can shrink 25% (some up to 10%). To account for shrinkage in your yardage calculation: if buying 100" of 44" wide fabric, 5% shrinkage means you will end up with ~95" ~41.8". Pre-wash fabric before cutting whenever the finished item will be washed. Dry-clean-only fabrics (wool, silk, some rayons) and home decor fabrics typically do not need pre-washing. Synthetics (polyester) shrink minimally (<1%).
What is the difference between 44-inch and 60-inch fabric width?
Fabric width (selvedge to selvedge) affects how many pattern pieces fit across and therefore how many yards you need. 44" (112 cm) common for quilting cottons, utility fabrics, most home dec prints. 60" (152 cm) common for knits, wool, and many apparel fabrics. A pattern requiring 3 yards at 44" width may only need 2 yards at 60" width because more pieces fit per row. Always check the pattern's yardage chart for the specific fabric width you are buying.
How do I calculate fabric for upholstery?
For upholstery: measure the widest and longest point of each section to be covered (seat, back, arms, cushions), add 46" to each measurement for pulling taut. Calculate total fabric as: (sum of all piece lengths fabric width per row fabric length per row) + pattern repeat per piece. A standard dining chair typically needs 0.751 yard; a sofa takes 1218 yards. Always buy 1015% extra for mistakes and future repairs.
